This might be what we look like when we are grandparents!
We had a great time celebrating our Grandparents! Welcome to my blog! I will update this blog at least monthly to let you know what we are doing in class, school events, and pictures. I will let you know when it is updated with an email or a remind text. I look forward to meeting everyone at Meet the Teacher night Tuesday, August 13th from 6-7 p.m. You can stop by anytime to fill out paperwork and begin organizing school supplies. First day of school is Thursday, August 15th. This week (March 4th-8th) we are celebrating Read Across America Week. Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading during the week of Dr. Seuss's birthday. This year not only are we dressing up to celebrate but 2nd grade is welcoming parents (or grandparents) to join us! I would love for you to sign up and come to our classroom to read us one of your favorite Dr. Seuss books or any favorite, 2nd grade appropriate book. Please use the following link to sign up if you would like to join us. If you need me to get you a book just let me know! The Book Fair will be in the library and fun games/activities will be all around our school. All the activities will be based around our book Frindle. School WILL BE in Session Monday, March 11th and Tuesday, March 12th! Tuesday will be a 1/2 day. I will not be at school to receive emails. Please call the office to let them know if your child is going home differently. Then enjoy Spring Break Wednesday-Friday. Student Led Conferences: Monday, March 25th from 3:30-7:00 you will be invited to come tour the classroom with your child while they discuss some of their school work, success and challenges they are still working on. If your child is reading a couple levels below grade level then I will have a private conference with you to discuss summer school. I will be contacting you through email within the next couple weeks to get a spring conference scheduled. Thank you for all the money donations, taking time to make valentines and creating a box. We had fun! Every Monday in February students and staff are encouraged to wear red to show our support for the American Heart Association. School wide Book Read: The book Frindle was sent home Friday with a letter to explain our school wide book read. The idea is to get the whole family reading. Each family will get one copy of the book (the oldest sibling should have gotten the book) and we want to encourage reading together at home by following the reading schedule that was in the note. Please let me know if your family did not get a book or you need another note. We will also be reading Frindle in class and doing activities along the way. We will celebrate the end of the book with Literacy Night on Thursday, March 7th from 6-7. The whole family is welcome to come enjoy the book fair and a variety of other activities that will be themed around the book. Tuesday, February 5th: Hat Day, bring .25 cents or a boxed/canned food item to help support our Willard Food Pantry. Friday, February 15th: Classroom Friendship Party, a note will be coming home with more details and a class list. Students are welcome to bring a decorated box for Valentines. If they do not have a box by Friday I will let them decorate a bag to hold all of their Valentines. It is also a half day, students will be dismissed at 12:30. Please call the office or email me if your child is going home a different way. Monday, February 18th: School is IN SESSION, this will be our snow day make up. Friday, February 22nd: Leadership Day. We will have visitors from around our community, board members and other school staff coming to see how we use the Leader in Me program in our school. They will be coming to community time, visiting student action teams and classrooms. Community Time will start at 9:00 instead of 8:25. Classroom Behavior: I am having to go over rules and expectations again and again with students because of their disrespectful behavior toward myself and other peers. Please remind your child at home the importance of following directions and being respectful to everyone. You can help by checking their behavior calendar in their STAR folder every night to see what kind of day they had. We have also had some items go missing in our classroom. We've had many discussions about stealing and what to do if you find something that doesn't belong to you. However, you might want to remind your child all personal items should be left at home. What We Are Learning: Math: We just completed our time and money unit. However, this is a life skill you can continue to help your child with at home. Our next topic is place value to 1,000 and understanding of each digit represents an amount of ones, tens, and hundreds. This will lead into adding and subtracting three digit numbers with regrouping. Writing: We are writing opinion papers. Students must state their opinion and give supporting reasons of why they have that opinion. Our next piece will be "The Best Part of Me." Reading: While reading fiction texts we are asking and answering questions to show understanding of key details. Our new second grade goal is to retell a story. When your child reads at home please encourage them to answer questions and retell the story they just read. Social Studies: We are finishing up locating the 7 continents and 5 major oceans. Next we will be going into reading maps. It's hard to believe we've been in school 100 days! We had fun day looking old, counting out 100 marshmallows and 100 tooth picks then designing objects, and writing about what we will look like and what we might be doing when we are 100 years old. They will be bringing home their writing in a couple weeks. I only got a few pictures....sorry! Thank you again for all of the donations! I'm sure the houses were a smashed mess by the time they got home but we sure had fun!! |
