Math: We are learning addition strategies and will be starting subtraction strategies this week. Extra math practice (homework) was sent home Friday. I plan on sending home the extra math pages every Friday from the lessons taught that week. This is not mandatory homework but will definitely benefit your student. If they choose to return it on Monday I will reward them.
Writing: We are beginning to gather ideas to write personal narrative, small moment, stories. These stories focus on just a scene or two of an event. You can help at home by helping your child remember specific details about a special time (Ex: first time you saw your new pet, riding a bike without training wheels, going swimming and jumping off a diving board, helping plant the garden, etc.)
Reading: We have learned how to choose books, three ways to read a book, and how to read to self. We are building our stamina to read quietly, our goal is 20 minutes. So far we are up to 7 minutes. This week we will learn the expectations for reading to someone and begin practicing checking for understanding.
Theme: We completed many "get to know you" activities. We are going into learning how our families help meet our needs and wants. We will follow up this activity with Grandparent's Teas (see details below).
Leadership: We have discussed what a habit is and why we need to practice good habits. Each day students learn how I'm meeting my lead measures to accomplish my personal goal, this will soon lead to students creating their own personal goals. This week we will start putting our leadership binders together. Leadership binders will hold information about themselves, WIGS (Wildly Important Goals), celebrations, leadership roles, and learning. We will also create our classroom mission statement.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
S.T.A.R. Folders: Thank you for checking your child's black STAR folder every night. I have told students it is their responsibility to show you their behavior calendar. If they are on yellow, orange or red please have student tell you what happened and sign their folder. If the square is not signed the next day they will have to walk a reminder lap at recess. Reading logs are in the folder as well, I check those on Fridays. Please document when your child is reading at home. Reading every week for a total of 30 minutes is what is expected all year. Please help your child become a better reader by encouraging reading at home!
Spirit Sales are due tomorrow, Monday, August 28th.
Grandparent's Tea: All of second grade is inviting grandparents to school Friday, September 8th from 2:45-3:30. We will have a few things to share and refreshments. This will end our Families unit of study and it's just in time for the official Grandparent's Day. Please look for a light green note going home tomorrow, it will need to be signed and returned if a grandparent is able to come. If a grandparent is unable to come we have school staff to fill in. We like to keep this special event for grandparents only.
NO SCHOOL: Friday, September 1st and Monday, September 4th. Enjoy your Labor Day Weekend!!
